An Access Checklist for DMV Homes and Small Businesses
A move, a tenant change or a business handover is a useful time to review who can enter the property. The checklist should include physical keys, electronic credentials, garage remotes and the condition of the doors themselves.
Keyed In LLC provides locksmith and physical security services for homeowners, business owners and managed properties across Washington, DC, Maryland and Northern Virginia. Here is a practical starting point for planning the work.
Review keys and lock condition
Identify every exterior door and the keys that operate it. If you do not know who holds working copies, ask a locksmith whether the existing locks can be rekeyed. Rekeying changes which key operates a compatible lock; replacing the hardware may be appropriate when it is damaged, unsuitable or no longer meets the property's needs.
For a business or rental property, review any master key arrangement before changing locks. Confirm who is authorized to request the work and which people should receive access afterward.
Update electronic access
Inventory keypad codes, smart lock accounts, fobs and garage remotes. Arrange to remove access that is no longer authorized and confirm who controls the administrator account. Follow the manufacturer's supported transfer and setup process when equipment changes hands.
Before selecting a smart lock, discuss compatibility with the door, how residents or staff will use it, power requirements, and the approved method of entry if the usual electronic method is unavailable. The best choice depends on how the property operates.
Look beyond the lock
Tell the technician about doors that scrape, stick, do not close properly or show damage around the frame. Replacing a lock by itself may leave a door problem unresolved. Include side and rear entrances in the review, along with garage doors and gates where present.
For commercial openings, proposed hardware changes should be evaluated for the opening's use and applicable requirements. Keep operating instructions and service information available to the people responsible for the property.
Confirm what cameras actually provide
If cameras are installed, check the view, image quality and recording setup with an authorized administrator. Establish who can retrieve recordings, how long records are retained, and whether a subscription is required for the features you expect to use.
A live view, an event image and stored video are different capabilities. Ask for a demonstration of the functions included in your system and a clear explanation of any optional services.
Create a practical improvement plan
Start with current access and door operation, then consider improvements such as more convenient credentials, updated cameras or additional controlled entrances. Request a proposal that explains the recommended work and identifies optional upgrades separately.
